ANNOTATION # 2
Description
A critical component of your success entails reading actively. Whether you read the articles/chapters from a digital copy or a physical copy, it is essential to annotate. Annotating a text means that you take notes in the margins and make other markings for reading comprehension. Annotating can help you understand the piece, highlight important concepts, and enhance your recall of the material. You can annotate an article by hand or with an online note-taking program (Listmann, wikiHow: How to Annotate (Links to an external site.)).
Instructions
Since I am providing PDF’s of everything, typing your notes and uploading them is probably best, but you can also submit pdf’s of your handwritten notes (see instructions below). I suggest typing them because you can go back and search and copy and paste when it comes time to prepare for the final exam. Either way, do your best to write neatly/clearly and make sure your annotations are legible. Remember to review the study guide questions before reading so you know what to look for. Do the following for each assigned article/chapter:
Pre-Reading Tasks
- Read the first paragraph and highlight key sentence/s. Write a summative note in the margin.
- Read the last paragraph and highlight key sentence/s. Write a summative note in the margin.
- This should give you a general sense of what the article is about.
During-Reading Tasks
- Highlight and/or underline, or type key ideas and terminology throughout. Symbols and/or a color-coding system is encouraged. (Tip: Circle key terms and put a *next to key ideas so they’re easy to find later).
- Write notes in the margins, a few comments per page, including what the text says (summaries), questions, and your personal reactions.
- Make associations: text to text (how are the articles in conversation with one another?); text to self (how does the article relate to your existing knowledge or prior experiences?); text to world (can you relate what you read to current events?)
Post-Reading Tasks
- Highlight your “power quote” and make a note in the margin as to why you believe this is the most compelling quote.
- At the end of the article, write your three most important “takeaways.” What are the main ideas? What did you learn?
Submitting Your Assignment
Upload your annotations as a .pdf, .png, or .jpeg file. It will be best if you can upload one file with all of your annotations or one file per source. You will be able to upload multiple files, but no more than three.
How to Convert Handwritten Notes to a PDF
If you completed your annotations on a physical copy, you can follow these steps to create a PDF. This is just one suggestion––if you know of a more efficient way, please let me know.

- Next, tap the Save (#) button in the bottom right corner.
- You have now created a PDF that can be saved to your online drive. Tap the share button in the upper right hand corner and tap “Save to Files” or email the PDF to yourself.
For Android
- Download the free CamScanner(Links to an external site.)(Links to an external site.) app to your smart phone and create your profile.
- Tap the camera button (should be set to batch) to take clear photos of each page of your notes.
- To finish, tap the icon in the bottom right that indicates the number of images and a > right arrow. You can then edit the borders so just the page itself is in the frame.
- After editing, tap the green √ checkmark in the bottom right.
- Next, tap PDF preview, then share (green button in the upper right corner), and then save the PDF to your online drive or email it to yourself.
Please upload your annotations for all the readings listed below that you are expected to read this week. I would prefer that you type your notes and upload as one document but if you have to handwrite your notes you can submit pictures (or preferred one PDF with all your notes).
Please make sure to review Annotating a Text.pdf.
The point is not to have notes on every single paragraph, but rather to get a solid grasp of key themes, quotes, key terms, information and ideas as detailed above.
