You and several members of your shift have been invited to your sergeant’s house for a BBQ on your day off. The sergeant’s daughter asks her father if he has any cigarettes while standing around with the sergeant and a couple of your shift mates. He pulls a pack of cigarettes from his shirt pocket and delivers it to her. Later, you spot the daughter and one of her friends, both of whom are drinking beers from cans, sitting off to the side. The daughter is 16 years old, as you know from the previous introduction. Her friend appears to be around her age.
Analyze the problem and write a report that includes the following information:
In this situation, talk about all of your possibilities. Demonstrate how each alternative is grounded in a moral framework.
Provide background information about the behaviors outlined in the scenario from your home state. What are the laws in your state regarding the sale of cigarettes or alcohol to minors?

Crime Control and Applied EthicsA criminal justice student is observing the activities of a patrol unit (two officers) in a mid-sized Midwestern city during a “ride-along.” They come across three ladies on a street corner who appear to be involved in prostitution: the women are barely clothed and conversing with passing motorists and pedestrians. The two patrol cops simply give the women a brief wave and continue driving.
The student inquires as to why the officers did not stop, question, or arrest the women, as it is obvious to the student that they are prostitutes. The senior officer responds, “It’s part of the deal.” “They are allowed to work in particular locations as long as they are not harassing people or causing trouble, and we leave them alone.” Then, when we have a large case, they agree to assist us in gathering information on suspects’ “who and where.” They self-police to ensure that their consumers are not robbed. It’s a protocol that the new chief instituted around two years ago, where if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.”
“They also know that we round them up and book them approximately every six months for publicity reasons,” the junior officer adds, “but the cases never get processed.” The pupil inquires, “Does this truly work?”
“Yeah, that works quite well sometimes,” the senior officer says, “but the essential point is that it saves us a lot of time and effort from having to investigate these cases all the time.” Now that we have more people to focus on real crimes, one of these girls will occasionally come up with fantastic leads on major cases.”
