Make a mental note of how much trash you see in each category. You’ll choose an indicator for monitoring waste volume and the best time of day to conduct your observations. It’s critical to your findings that you evaluate waste at the same time each day. Describe the indicator you’ll use to determine how much waste is in each wastebasket. (You can make a drawing, weigh something, or do anything else.)
Examine your research notes after a couple of days. To develop themes and patterns, “ask questions” about what you notice in your notes. You might want to keep track of who has garbage cans in their rooms and who doesn’t. Why is that? What waste do I see in my parents’ or roommate’s rooms that I don’t see in mine?
