Systemic and Individual Explanations to the Study of Social Problems is the first paper assignment.
24 pages is a good length to aim for (double spaced, including bibliography). Only online submissions are accepted.
Objective:
The assignment’s main goal is to introduce students to how sociologists study social problems and how this differs from other methods of studying/explaining social problems (e.g., explanations found in everyday conversations, explanations provided by other disciplines, and explanations provided by the media). This exercise is aimed to introduce students to the difference between explanations that look at the traits and behaviors of individuals (person-blame explanations) and explanations that look at the bigger elements in society (system-blame explanations). This assignment will also put students’ critical thinking and communication skills to the test.
The following is a complete list of the assignment’s objectives:
1. Identifying the two basic theoretical approaches to studying social issues.
2. Assessing the merits and shortcomings of various theoretical approaches to social problems.
3. Demonstrating the ability to recognize and explain various approaches to social problems utilized in editorial pages of newspapers.
3. Demonstrating the capacity to apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations.
4. Effectively communicating ideas in a format that is appropriate for the discipline
Directions:
A. Define (in your own words) the approaches to the analysis of social problems known as “system-blame” and “person-blame.” 20 points
B. Examine three short letters to the editor published in USA Today (at the bottom of the guidelines) that provide examples of several approaches to describing homelessness in the United States. 30 pts.
– Determine the author’s approach (“person-blame” or “system-blame”?) in each letter.
– For each method, make a list of the writers’ suggested reasons of homelessness.
– Using your sociological knowledge, explain which of these specific theories help to our understanding of homelessness and which do not (give two instances of good explanations and two examples of ineffective explanations). Remember that, as we covered in class, “weak” explanations are those that do not include any elements outside of the individuals. Strong explanations focus on societal elements that contribute to social issues.
C. Apply your knowledge of the system blaming approach to the study of social problems by attempting to explain the reasons of one current social problem (you need to find at least one newspaper article about this problem). A discussion of the topic that was already discussed in class and/or originates from the letters below will not be given credit. 30 points
D. Provide a properly formatted bibliography of all sources used for this work (MLA, APA, or ASA formats are acceptable). The three letters to the editor are not required to be included in your bibliography. 10 points
E. Idea communication, paper organization, language, spelling, and punctuation. 10 points
Important: Keep in mind that this is a brief article, therefore citing other authors/sources should be kept to a bare minimum. You must mention the source of the information/quotes in the body of your work as well as in the bibliography section if you use outside sources. Plagiarism of any kind will result in a score of zero.
For each day your submission is late, you will lose ten points.
