Performance/Creative Project for Shakespeare (Revised for online)
Overview
This assignment asks you to interact with the text, creatively or through performance. There are a number of options for completion that I will list below. All students will submit two items for this assignment: 1) the creative/performance project 2) a well-developed paragraph summary/explanation of your project.
You will complete two creative assignments this semester. The second assignment will focus on a play that you select from the second part of the term, and is NOT a play on which you did the first assignment: either Hamlet (if you did not do Hamlet for the first assignment—otherwise choose another play), Macbeth, or The Tempest.
Options for Part One
- Imagine that you are a director of a Shakespeare performance; select one character to focus on. Write down the instructions that you would give to an actor playing this character in your production. What would you tell them? Make the directions 2/3- 1 page long. Load as a document to the creative work spot on Blackboard.
- Write a creative piece from the perspective of one of these characters. This could be a diary entry, personal monologue, or poem. A diary/journal or monologue should be about one to two pages long, or a series of diary entries totaling that length. Poem lengths can vary depending on structure/form. Load as a document to the creative work spot on Blackboard.
- Draw an illustration of a scene from one of our plays. Take a picture of your illustration and submit it as a jpeg or pdf to the creative work spot on Blackboard. That should work easily enough, but this link can help troubleshoot as you load your photo:

- Alternative illustration: Create a drawing that illustrates a piece of figurative language from Shakespeare, labeling the items/aspects of your drawing in order to make clear what is being compared to what. Scan/photograph the completed work and load to Blackboard.
- Film yourself performing a monologue from the play. For this, the whole video file will be too much to post, so please load onto a site, like youtube, and load a word document with the link. Submit the link to the creative work spot on Blackboard.
Part Two
Write a paragraph explanation of your creative work, explaining the piece and the background thinking that went into its creation—how did you interpret this scene/character and how are you communicating this idea to your audience through this piece?
Submission
I have created a place on Blackboard for you to submit your assignment—you will submit the assignment in two parts. The first will be your creative piece (see notes above, Part One for specifics). Submit the creative piece itself in the assignment labeled “creative work #1.” Submit the explanation paragraph under the “creative discussion paragraph #1” section.
