Rights Working Group. (2012, May). The NSEERS Effect: A Decade of Racial Profiling, Fear, and Secrecy. Retrieved from https://pennstatelaw.psu.edu/_…
In this report, Penn State Law looks at the impact of the controversial NSEERS program run by the Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2011, put in place following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The NSEERS program required that males ages 16-25 in many predominantly Muslim countries around the world be fingerprinted, photographed, and interrogated in order to enter the United States even temporarily for any purpose. The program led to deportations without due process, and more lasting effects of said individuals who were denied such due process, such as trouble with immigration now. The original program has been suspended since 2016, but the data collected in the program is still on file with the DHS and possibly other agencies within the government.
This data is private information and is often data collected on innocent people in the United States and abroad. While it is unclear what this data is being used for at this time, the fact that it remains on file with the government makes people fear what it may be used for in the future. The source’s argument is that this sort of data collection is unconstitutional, not useful, and thus should be dismantled. The source’s evidence is a mix of primary and secondary evidence. They report on a lot of information gathered by other organizations and government agencies to form their arguments.
They also rely on some primary evidence by researching the impacts on individuals affected by these policies. This report is relevant to my report as it shows the real-world effects of such large-scale data collection policies within our country and the lasting effects of them if the existing programs are not fully dismantled. Even when they’re dismantled, because they existed in the first place it’s hard to completely get rid of the lasting data, but also a framework is created to reinstate the programs in the future even though they are currently shut down.
This source is a report, which differs from the Washington Times source, which is an article in a newspaper. The report takes an extensive look at an issue that is a matter of great importance to the group who authored the report from Penn State Law. The Washington Times is a slightly conservative-leaning newspaper based in Washington that was reporting on relevant news at the time of publication. This report incorporates some primary evidence to give recommendations at the end of the report as to what should be done about the situation that they analyzed.
This source will be most useful to my report in that it gives evidence for the ineffectiveness in a practical sense of these mass surveillance programs the government uses. This source gives an example to the audience of something they may not realize is happening from their government but will feel is wrong. The example that is most relevant to my report from this source is that despite the government using this massive program, they were unable to link any of the data collection to terrorism that they were trying to stop.
Ybarra, M. (2015, May 21). FBI admits no major cases cracked with Patriot Act snooping powers. Retrieved October 25, 2020, from https://www.washingtontimes.co…
In this article, Ybarra reports that the FBI, upon assessing the outcomes of the US Patriot Act, has found that no major cases or terrorism threats have been thwarted in direct response to the copious snooping powers allowed to the government under this law. She reports on the statement made by the Inspector General Michael Horowitz in May of 2015, in which Horowitz explains that despite the government’s large increase of use of the powers granted to them under the law, they were unable to gather any useful intelligence. Using this law, the government was gathering records and documents from American citizens and businesses who had no links to any terrorism investigations.
They were, for a long time, gathering too much information on innocent people and took years to decrease how much they did that. Ybarra argues that with this new information from the time, opponents of the Patriot Act have something of substance to point to when explaining why the law deserves the axe. The evidence used by the author of this article is secondary, as she reported on a statement from a government official. This source is relevant to my report as the Patriot Act is widely seen in America as the greatest intrusion of Americans’ privacy without basis, as the broad permission of powers granted to the government in the name of safety is far too overreaching with minimal regulations.
This article from The Washington Times informs the reader of a government official’s findings using secondary research and evidence, as opposed to the report from Penn State Law that uses a mixture of primary and secondary evidence to get to its conclusions. This source is meant to draw a similar conclusion about government ineptitude when it comes to their implementation of spying in the name of security.
This source is meant to inform, and not necessarily persuade or recommend anything to its audience. My focus from this source is that the FBI admits its failure from its program it put in place that simply infringes upon the rights of many innocent and law-abiding Americans. This source shows the audience the results from a somewhat widely known piece of legislation that is generally unpopular. The main idea I wish to use here is that despite the government tripling their spying capabilities upon the authorization of this act, they failed to get any results that they had anticipated in the drafting of the law.

Leng, T. (2020, September 10). The effectiveness of social bubbles as… | Wellcome Open Research. Wellcome Open Research. https://wellcomeopenresearch.o…
In this research report published by a group of authors with the Centre of Mathematical Modeling of Infectious Disease in the UK, they looked into a form of contact clustering called social bubbles that is being utilized during this pandemic. Along with social distancing, forming so called bubbles may reduce the transmission of the coronavirus. Their goal was to estimate the effectiveness of such strategies and see the impact it had on epidemic and mortality risk. They utilized a mathematical model to assess the transmission generated by social bubbles, using UK as a case study. A synthetic population similar to the UK population was used and divided the population up based on households and age bands. The base case they used is where non-essential shops and schools are closed.
Then they simulated social bubble strategies within various scenarios with differing number of people in each households. Finally, they used this data to gauge the effectiveness of social bubbles and whether it is a viable tool to reduce transmission. This research report is valuable to my topic because it provides me with data and information on the effectiveness of a bubble. Leagues such as the NFL and MLB are not utilizing such a bubble and this article can be used to provide recommendations for them to operate similar to the NBA.
