Directions:
This exam is divided into two parts.
- Part I consists of completing the exam.
- Part II requires you to submit a scanned PDF of the outline used for the exam within 15 minutes of completing Part I.

Writing this rhetorical analysis essay will help you evaluate the persuasiveness of a speech based on its rhetorical elements. Fully developing an organized essay by incorporating evidence and connecting evidence to the thesis ideas in an organized way will make your writing stronger.
You may use the two-page outline including the Work Cited (one sheet front and back) while testing.
- Using your completed sentence outline as a guide, type a 5-paragraph rhetorical analysis essay of 500-750 words (approximately 2-3 pages) showing how the speaker uses rhetorical devices and/or rhetorical appeals to make his/her speech effective.
- Remember to place your thesis sentence at the end of your introduction.
- Use evidence from the speech (direct quotes, paraphrasing, summarizing) as support for your thesis ideas. In addition, include analysis (explanation) of how and/or why supporting evidence and ideas support the thesis claim. Remember to use proper in-text citations within the text of your essay as well as to include a separate Work Cited page at the end of the essay.

Continually connect the speaker’s device/technique to the overall theme or purpose of the speech.

The answer is complete. 50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing. Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable.
