The hero, Utena Tenjou, is a teen-aged girl who has the explicit goal of taking on the stereotypically male gender role of prince. At the same time her own prince has given her an engagement ring, and of course the woman who marries a prince is a princess, a stereotypically female gender role. In short, Utena is revolutionary because she takes on both stereotypical and astereotypical gender roles. So: what effect might viewing Revolutionary Girl Utena have on existing gender role stereotypes in its target audience, which is girls roughly fifteen years old?
Why? Be sure to discuss this from a theoretical perspective, i.e. “Theory (whatever) says, ‘whatever,’ and that means in this instance the effect should be (whatever) because (whatever).” You may choose any ONE theory you please. Be specific in both discussion and examples. Watch carefully, as gender roles are often user transparent. For example, in the episode a great deal is made of the fact that Utena wears a boy’s uniform jacket. But at a school where the boys wear trousers and the girls skirts, Utena wears shorts, violating both roles simultaneously (with no comment).
And, of course, with her boy’s jacket and gender neutral shorts, she has the elaborately dressed hair of a girl.
