How Healthy are You? – Assessment & Reflection (Precontemplation)
Throughout the next several weeks, you will complete additional assessments to help you identify a behavior change for one part of your life that has either a) influenced one of your dimensions of health, or, b) been influenced by one of the dimensions of your functioning – mental/emotional, physical, social, spiritual, intellectual – or whichever dimensions you accept in your definition of health. As you can see – the relationship of behavior and health can work either way. Your behavior will influence your health and your health may also influence your behavior.
Your challenge for this course it to determine an area of your day-to-day life that you would like to change to improve your health and general life satisfaction. One of the goals for your Personal Health Portfolio is to identify and plan for a positive behavior change. The behavior change is based on the Transtheoretical Model, also known as the stages-of-change model. The idea of this model is that behavior change usually does not succeed if we start with the change itself. Instead, we must go through a series of stages to adequately prepare ourselves for that change. The first two stages of the model are: Precontemplation and Contemplation.People in the precontemplation stage have no current intention of changing. They may have tried to change a behavior before and given up, or they may be in denial and unaware of any problem. People in the contemplation stage recognize they have a problem and begin to contemplate the need to change. People can languish in this stage for years, realizing that they may have a problem but lack the time or energy to make the change. The video below discusses this more in detail.
To be clear, your Personal Health Portfolio will be completed throughout the semester. You will complete assessments and reflections in modules 1 – 4, a behavior change contract in module 5, the submission of logs in modules 6 – 8, and a reflection report in module 9. For further instructions and grading guidance please refer to the 210 HED Behavior Change Guidelines located in the course modules.
At this point in the course, you will begin to identify a targeted behavior change. You will do this by completing the Chapter 1 Assessment: How Healthy Are You? This will fulfill the precontemplation and contemplation part of the model.
