We have a habit of reading a lot of information on the internet (Facebook, Reddit, TikTok, etc). But how do we know it’s correct? You will evaluate the validity of a Tumbler post in this activity. Use the sources to respond to the following questions after reading the Tumbler post: Is the information on Tumblr correct? Moctezuma had a zoo, right? Explain using the sources as evidence. (maximum of 350 words)tumbler article:
To this day, the popular myth that Europeans brought advanced civilization and technology to a hemisphere populated by primitive peoples reigns supreme. From the far north of Canada to the far south of Chile, this story has been used to oppress indigenous peoples. It’s also completely untrue.
Moctezuma Xocoyotzin’s zoo alone dwarfed anything the Spanish invaders had ever seen. The zoo, or totocalli, of the Mexica Triple Alliance ruler housed so many animals that hundreds of people were employed just to care for them. The zoo had huge aviaries full of beautiful birds that Mexica royalty could watch at their leisure and artisans could pluck for headdresses, jewelry, and art. Large fresh and salt water aquariums with fish, crocodiles, and other animals were also available. Rooms with countless monkeys, reptiles, amphibians, wolves, jaguars, cougars, ocelots, birds of prey, including eagles, and bears were added on top of that. The zoo was surrounded by magnificent botanical gardens.

EACH SOURCE’S BACKGROUND INFORMATION (SOURCES WILL BE ATTACHED)
1st source(codex):
The Florentine Codex is a twelve-volume manuscript about life in the Mexica Triple Alliance, written by Mexica students under the direction of Spanish missionary Bernardino de Sahagn between 1570 and 1585. The Florentine Codex is regarded as one of the most important sources on Mexican history and culture by historians. Read the information in the Item Detail section. Examine the illustration at the top of page 64 next. It is accompanied by the following text: Another room was called totocalli, and it was here that caretakers kept eagles and other large birds known as tlauhquéchol and zacuan, as well as parrots and alome and coxoliti. And there, all of the various artisans worked: gold and silversmiths, coppersmiths, feather workers, painters, stone cutters, green stone mosaic workers, and wood carvers. Wild animal caretakers, who guarded tigers, lions, leopards, and servals, also lived in this area.
2nd source (map):
This map of Tenochtitlan, the Triple Alliance’s capital, was published alongside Hernán Cortés’ letters to King of Spain and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1524. Tenochtitlan’s image was the first to be printed in Europe. Scholars have argued over who created the map and what information was used to create it. Some speculate that it was based on Cortés’ eyewitness account. Others claim it was built by a conquistador who was trained as a surveyor. Others claim it was based on a Mexica map from earlier times. It’s likely that whoever created it drew inspiration from both indigenous and European sources. Read the information in the Item Detail section. Examine the map after that. Find the city center and zoom in (the large square in the middle of the right page). In the city center, the map depicts the Main Temple, which is dedicated to Tláloc, the rain god, and Huitzilopotchtli, the sun god. Look for the words TEMIXTITAN (Latin for “Tenochtitlan”) and dom aialui (Latin for “house of the animals”).
Examine the illustration to the right of the words “dom aialui.”
Translations

Source 3: Cortes’ Letter (264-266)
This letter was written by Hernán Cortés to King Charles V of Spain and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. When Cortés traveled from Cuba to Mexico, he defied orders. Historians believe that one of the main reasons Cortés wrote these letters was to avoid punishment.
