Description/Paper Instructions
You will complete three case studies in a 9-page project. The situation
The Global Derivatives Debacles book may or may not have influenced the studies. One example must be about forwards/futures, another about swaps, and yet another about options. For this assignment, you will select real-life examples and investigate how they may be applied in practice.
Financial instruments discussed in class are used by businesses and sectors.
A description of how the use of a derivative was relevant in understanding a historical event (a financial crisis, a big company collapsing due to bad risk taking or fraud, how a city was rebuilt, or a war financed, how a historical circumstance gave rise to the creation of a derivative…) would be my preference. For a good grade, you’ll need to cite your sources. I want to see that you looked for the information you needed in financial news and reputable sites. The project can be completed in groups of two or on an individual basis.
*I will provide feedback if and only if you submit a case for “evaluation” before the exam for that part. At the end of the semester, all three cases must be submitted as a single project.
Information about the project
If you decide to use one of the stories from the selected book as a case study, which I highly recommend, the following ideas are for you:
– Include a quick explanation of what happened as well as a full response to the questions at the end of the chapter in your case study. (At the end of each chapter, there is a list of questions that can be answered using the knowledge in the chapter.)
– Skim through all of the cases and read each sort of derivative twice. To begin, go over the circumstances and try to figure out what occurred. Make a list of the things you don’t understand and come to my office to ask me questions. Then go back to the beginning of the chapter and look for the specific solutions to the questions at the conclusion.
– Each case study should be 3–4 pages long, 1.5–double spaced. 1 inch margins, Times New Roman or Book Antiqua, size 12. Any graph can be built by hand, but it must be very neat. The graphs are not included in the 3-4 page limit.
– Create a cover page and a content page for the full project (all three scenarios together). At the end of each example, include graphics or an appendix.
– Explain things in your own words. I have the book; I don’t need you to transcribe entire paragraphs from it. I’d like to hear your version of what happened, in your own words.
The deadline is December 12th at 12 p.m. In my workplace. This is a printed copy. NO EMAILING IS ALLOWED.
