WEEK 8 EXERCISE Choosing an Audience and Genre for the Discipline Project
- Write a paragraph about your process of choosing an audience.
Use the “Choosing a Stakeholder Decision Matrix” below to identify possible audiences for your discipline project. Identify stakeholders of different kinds based on their importance (how much they have to lose or gain based on knowledge of your research) and their influence (how much power they have over decisions made based on the outcome of your research).
Choose one of these audiences (preferably high importance and high influence). Why would this audience be interested in the topic of your research? What position is this audience likely to have on the issue before reading your DP? What biases might they have? What aspects of the article you’ve chosen might be difficult for this audience to understand? What decisions might this audience make based on evidence presented in the article you have chosen for your DP?
- Write a paragraph about your process of choosing a genre.
Here are some possible genres for public audiences:
Magazine article
Newsletter article
Blog post
Letter of advocacy
Brief
Look at examples of these genres and decide which would work best for the audience
you have chosen. What are some conventions of the genre? For example, what kind of
title does it tend to have? What kind of introduction? How long is it? Does it include
graphics? Do writers tend to rely rhetorical appeals on ethos (credibility), logos
(reason), or pathos (emotion)? How is information from academic sources integrated
or cited?
- Write an introduction to your discipline project. This should include:
–an introduction to the topic of your research, making it clear why research on this topic is important. This usually includes a description of a problem that research is attempting to solve.
–an introduction to the article you will be “translating.” (Title, authors/place research was done, where the article was published, purpose of the research)
–a statement about how this article stands out in the field, and the value of the close analysis you will provide to your chosen audience.
Stakeholder Decision Matrix
Choosing a stakeholder is one of the most important steps in your research. Use the matrix below to help you differentiate among potential stakeholders who have a vested interest and influence over the issue you chose.
The optimum choice for your stakeholder is a high influence, high importance stakeholder (Box A), but your issue may have a key stakeholder who is high influence, low importance (BOX C).
Secondary or indirect stakeholders may be low influence, high importance (BOX B). You are not required to identify secondary or indirect stakeholders, but if you feel an awareness of them will help you flesh out your argument, then list them.
When conducting your research for a stakeholder, try to come up with at least one stakeholder for either BOX A or BOX C. Choose your primary stakeholder from one of those two.
Degree of Influence
HIGH INFLUENCE LOW INFLUENCE
Degree of Importance
HIGH IMPORTANCE
LOW IMPORTANCE
BOX A
A stakeholder who stands to lose or gain much from the proposed action AND has decision-making power or high influence that can affect the implementation of the action.
BOX B
A stakeholder who stands to lose or gain much from the proposed action BUT does not have decision-making power or influence that can affect the implementation of the action.
BOX C
A stakeholder who does not stand to lose or gain much from the proposed action BUT has decision-making power or high influence that can affect the implementation of the action.
BOX D
A stakeholder who does not stand to lose or gain much from the proposed action AND does not have decision-making power or high influence that can affect the implementation of the action.
