Overview:“British Petroleum has been blamed and extensively criticized for the worst environmental disaster in U.S. History caused by the explosion of the deep water horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20 2020.” (pg.65)Deresky, H. (2017). International management: Managing across borders and cultures (9th ed.). Boston: PearsonIf BP have employed social responsibility the prevention of oil spills would be gone. They would have added more warning signs to the BP working area so that it would have stop disasters. I think that if there were government regulators to monitor the area then the crude oil will be gone. BP should implement and encourage government safety policies so that they will not have this problem. I think that if big business should do good for the community the same way that the community is good to big business. “In other words= big business should do good for the community the same way that the community is good to big business.” BP needs us (the public) to purchase their gasoline or they will expire. It give the bp businesses to practice integrity when working with the public and this includes safety. The most important thing that BP can help everyone would be safety because it would keep people safe and using good morals the BP would be a better place for employees, wildlife, and society.”Safety must become a way of doing things in the organization to be enforced by all staff and employees. By keeping people safe and using good morals, companies like BP can make a better place for employees, wildlife, and society.”the benefits of using a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) for BP would be: “Improved access to capital, secured license to operate revenue increases cost decreases, risk reduction, increase in brand value improved customer attraction and retention, improved reputation and improved employee recruitment, motivation, and retention.” (International management pg 46).The lack of social responsibility affected BP reputation would be that it would decrease access to capital, secured license to operate revenue decrease, cost increases, risk increases, decrease in brand value decrease customer attraction and retention Decrease reputation and decrease employee recruitment, motivation, and retention. Social responsibility includes to be responsible for and responsive to the needs of all stakeholders. That includes the environment starting from the ocean to the beaches and bayous. It also includes the animals living in these environments and the people using them, enjoying them and interacting with them for their livelihoods. Social responsibility includes also the workers working on the drilling rigs, the fishermen working in the area, but also the shareholders of BP, who don’t want BP to be stuck in multi-million dollar law suits. BP has failed all of them.
- First, BP was only concerned with drilling as fast as possible with the least amount of cost in order to make the biggest profit possible. They drilled too fast through rocky areas that required slower drill speeds to avoid cracks and gas leaks. Then they avoided to install expensive flexibility points on the drill itself in order to save cost. Then they avoided to shore up the drilling hole with safety cement, reduced the number of pressure measurements and neglected to install a safety shut-off mechanism on the well. So, they should have listened to their engineers who told them to drill slower, add safety features to the drill, protect the drill hole with cement, and add a safety valve on the well.
- The next level of failure occurred when the disaster actually happened. Instead of using the more expensive technique of sucking the oil into large tankers while it was swimming in large blocks on the ocean surface, BP decided to use so-called oil dispersers, toxic chemicals that break the oil into small droplets that sink into the ocean, where they affect fish, crabs and other wildlife. It was more important for BP to make the oil less visible than to actually clean it up. As a result, birds and fish began to die, and fishermen lost their jobs, as fishing grounds ran dry. BP should have listened to experts who warned them about the toxic effects of the dispersers and who recommended instead to suck up the oil into tankers.
- Finally, BP invested instead in a public relation campaign that was aiming to show a company that was all about protecting the environment. Employees and victims of the explosion had to sign non-disclosure agreements in order to keep the truth from coming out. The company hired scientists, but also told them what to say and what not to say. The beaches were cleaned in front of TV cameras, but the public was kept away from the polluted ocean, where the real damage was happening. In the end, BP was only concerned with its image and its bottom line. Here, obviously the truth would have helped! BP should have been honest about the damage done and transparent about the clean-up efforts. It should also have allowed the public and the media access to the oil spill area. Lastly, honest damage payments to the victims of the explosion would have been the least one could expect from a large company (p 65).In the long term, BP’s reputation will be tarnished for a long time. It is not clear, how the company can ever improve the image of being a reckless, exploitative organization that puts profit ahead of everything else.

I say that because I’ve always liked to talk to people and get to know them. I feel sometimes that I’m talking to someone and I always try to say something to make us laugh or that brings some joy to the conversation. That would be a good thing if I could work as a salesman, since I believe I can connect well with people and maybe get them better connected to me and consequently with what I do “People high in extroversion tend to enjoy talking and interaction with co-workers, and they gravitate toward jobs that have a good deal of social interaction.
- Research indicates that extroverted people tend to perform well in sales and managerial jobs, tend to do better in training programs, and tend to have higher levels of overall job satisfaction.”(P.68).The one I possess the least is emotional stability, since sometimes I don’t know how to deal well with things, overthink or suffer from anticipation (anxiety). However, I believe that for some situations that’s a “good thing”, since I think to much about things and that makes me prepare better for whatever I need to do. An example, is that I have a quiz and even though I might know the stuff I still think that I might not have a good grade, or that the test will be to difficult. However when I get there, most of the times I do ok, since I was so stressed about it and focused more on studying to pass it. 2) Transactional leadership is when leaders show to their employees what’s need to be done and accomplished.
- They make sure that employees have the right tools to complete the job. “Transactional leaders will adjust goals, direction, and mission for practical reasons.” They rely on contingent rewards and on management by exception “Research shows that when contingent reinforcement is used, followers exhibit an increase in performance and satisfaction;54 followers believe that accomplishing objectives will result in their receiving desired rewards. Using management by exception, the leader won’t be involved unless objectives aren’t being accomplished.” (P.421) (P.523)”Transformational leaders, on the other hand, make major changes in the firm’s or unit’s mission, way of doing business, and human resources management to achieve their vision.” They will change whatever they need (the philosophy, the system, etc) in order to achieve the desired goals.
- They usually are people with a big charisma (one of the most important traits in a transformational leader). Therefore I would say that a “transformational leader motivates followers to work for goals instead of short-term self-interest and for achievement and self-actualization instead of security.” like transactional leaders do. The five big personality traits are extroversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness. The first trait is extroversion, which is a trait that indicates a person’s outgoing, talkative, sociable, and assertive. They perform well in sales or managerial jobs. (p. 68) Emotional stability is an individual who can be calm, relax and secure. (p. 68) Agreeableness is an individual who is trusting, kind, forgiving, affectionate, and courteous. (p. 69) These are the people that care for others and enjoy helping and assisting others who are in need of help.
- Conscientiousness is a trait where a person is dependable, organized, thoughtful, and responsible. Also, they persevere and like accomplishing things. It is mentioned that conscientiousness is “closely linked to job performance”. (p. 69) Openness to experience, are the individuals who are open-minded, creative, curious, and eager to learn new things and new experiences. (p. 69) I believe my top personality trait would be openness to experience because I like to learn new things and experiences and from that, I grow and develop as a person and a leader. But my least trait I have would be extroversion even though I like making friends and meeting new people.
- The two leaderships are transactional and transformational leadership. Transactional leadership is a style which helps follower identify what must be done to accomplish the goal. (p. 420) They also rely on organizational structures and policies, and they supervise everything and make sure that everything is followed. Transactional leaders use rewards to motivate the followers. On the other hand, transformational leadership motivates followers to work for goals instead of short-term self-interest and achievements. (p. 422) Transformational leaders focus on a vision that motivates the follower to work harder. An important characteristic of a transformational leader is charisma. It allows the leader to connect and communicate well with people which promotes diversity and inclusion and trust within the organization. Lastly, they can promote the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Reply
