Topic: Business Ethics
Paper details:Each student will submit two, 5-page independent article reports. For each of the IARs, students will select one current article that is strictly focused on business(not more than 6 months old) from an editor-reviewed media source (e.g., the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Time Magazine, the Star-Ledger, Sports Illustrated, CNN.com, FOXNews.com, NBCNews.com, USA Today, the Asbury Park Press, etc.). If a student is unsure whether their article fits this requirement, then they should consult with the Instructor. The article must be about business ethics and/or corporate social responsibility. Any topic covered in the Syllabus is acceptable. Remember, this is a business course and, as such, teams should not choose articles that focus on politics or the political climate either locally, nationally, or globally. Due to their active collaboration with paid advertisements and brand placements that resemble news sources, neither Forbes.com or the Huffington Post may not be used as source material for this assignment. IARs will normally be graded within two weeks. As this is a writing intensive course, in addition to each report’s content students will be graded based on their writing style, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The due dates for the IAR papers are listed in the course timeline at the end of this Syllabus. Additional guidance on the IAR papers is provided in Addendum A to this syllabus. In addition, the eCampus website provides the Business School’s Written Communication Rubric by which all papers will be evaluated.
First and foremost, an independent article report (IAR) is not a book report. As such, students should avoid providing a simple summary of their selected article. Providing a simple summary of the article will result in a“0” grade for the assignment. Each IAR should be prepared with standard word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Apache OpenOffice, Corel WordPerfect) and adhere to standard APA formatting guidelines as described below. A clear and concise, yet potent writing style will be necessary to score well on the IARs. Approximately one page of each IAR should provide some background on the article with the remaining four pages emphasizing the student’s analysis of the article. Each IAR should be presented in APA format including an APA-formatted cover page (you do notneed to include an abstract page) and the full five-page report itself. In addition, students must include a References page indicating the citation for the chosen article and any other sources referenced in the paper. As per approved APA guidelines, the IAR should adhere to the following document style and citation format: 12-pointTimes New Roman font with one-inch margins on all sides of each page. IARs must be double-spaced; no additional spacing is permitted before or after any paragraph lines. When a student’s IAR is due, the report must be submitted via eCampus. Late reports will be subject to grade reductions for each day, week, or partial week that the report is overdue. When students are preparing their IARs, the following points should guide their thoughts:1.What is the theme of the article from your point of view?2.How does this article relate to business ethics?3.Whichtheory of business ethics is found within the article? a. Students should reference theories from the class lectures and readings in this section.4.What is your personal reaction to the article?5.Whatwouldyouhave done if you were in a management or leadership position in the situation presented in the article? In applying these guiding questions, students may consider breaking their IARs into the following headings:•Theme of the Article• Relationship to Business Ethics• The Theories of Business Ethics Mentioned •Reaction to the Article’s Content How I Would Address the Issue
You have to talk about rights and duties, virtue ethics, Consequentialism, or ethics of care
